INTERVISTA SU RAPPORTO CONFIDENZIALE (marzo 2009).
When was your first read Watchmen?
The first time I saw something of the work of Moore and Gibbons was in " Corto Maltese." I was not a reader of the magazine, but in the late eighties I remember that he had intercepted a number of chapters in an annex. Anyway I got to read it first time when the Rizzoli has finally published the book in 1993. Subsequently I then bought all the editions published in Italy and of course the original language.
What makes you think, Watchmen by other famous works in comics?
A difficult question to which everyone could give a different answer, then so much has been written on this topic that risk just repeat the same tired concepts. For my part I can tell you what makes me feel Watchmen is a masterpiece that this work is "esoteric," meaning that presents mysteries that can be revealed only gradually and progress from level to level. It 's a comics that works for everyone, but perhaps to understand the true nature of this novel must somehow have been "initiated" approach Watchmen as you would any other comics, superhero or not, sends you off the road. I have no difficulty in admitting the very first reading I liked the chorus of the story, the sublime texture of fiction Moore, the functional design Gibbons, continual inventions that we find in almost all sequences, and yet, despite all this I am able to truly understand the immense value of this masterpiece only after I accidentally came across in the records of the balloon Doug Atkinson . Beyond what has succeeded brilliantly highlight this American guy, the merit of his work was helping me to open my eyes and look inside the balloon with a focus completely different. While working for years as a writer, I too was apparently the victim of a prejudice that has not allowed me to relate to Watchmen in the proper order, and we repeat that sometimes you may not get in tune with a ' work due to factors that have nothing to do with the personal baggage that weighs on our shoulders or our conception of good taste.
To pick up the application, we can say that Watchmen is perhaps the only comic to overcome all prejudice. Even the most unyielding opponent of the ninth art in front of Watchmen can not raise their hands and admit that the inclusion of this graphic novel on the list of a hundred masterpieces of reading English written some years ago by " Time" is fully justified .
How did you approach the project of reading this guide?
After reading records Atkinson, it seemed that there was still a lot to say and a little 'for fun I started to develop my own personal guide to reading that initially I never thought of publishing. Then the game I took my hand and I realized that unlock the secrets of Watchmen was on the whole the least interesting work. At one point I was clear that what I really wanted was to see how all the pieces ended up stuck. More I get, the more I discovered truly bizarre coincidences and surprising, so at some point I have focused on this aspect of the project and of course I could do because the work is so full of references to give me more and continue talking points. In the end, but this is an "accidental", the book seems more a historical treatise Cultural Learnings of a volume of literary criticism.
In some ways, mine is also a real investigation into the "modus scribendi" by Alan Moore . As the detective star of Manhunter I started on the trail of my man and I tried to understand what may have inspired or moved from time to time to make his choices.
The book examines the novel table to table searching out any reference, even hidden. What surprises can reserve allennesima read Watchmen?
Infinite. Watchmen is a universe in constant progression. To make a joke of Magnolia you could say "you can close with Watchmen but Watchmen not close with you. " For me it was true. We are very confident as the Americans came to Vietnam and just as they do not really have never left. Now the mechanisms triggered automatically. Everything you see or hear me trigger associations with aspects of Watchmen so good I do a bad job and I take what's good about this situation.
you faced with other fans of Watchmen in interpreting some aspects? It
several times in the forum from which I plundered wealth of information and ideas that I later developed independently. About this book is my signature, but ideally is a team effort that involved at least a hundred people. I have a big debt to all those before me have studied Watchmen and have selflessly shared their research results.
I feel like I was part of a study group that ideally combines people from all over the world. It goes without saying that my work does not end with the publication of the book because I believe there is still much to discover, or also be corrected, so if anyone wants to help me to adjust the shot I will be happy. In any case we must not forget that in this book I have poured my personal interpretations and already know perfectly well that some of the fans will disagree on some of my theories.
based on which editions you prepare for your reading guide?
know them all, but to quote the text that I preferred to use the last of Planeta because of easy availability. However, although there is still work to do, the 'Absolute is indeed the best edition of Watchmen which can be found in circulation.
think that in the translation from English into Italian certain nuances are lost?
Yes, of course. And almost always happens in the case of Watchmen unfortunately the rule. All translations read so far have holes. The idea that I did, in some cases the translators have not properly understood the true meaning of the sentence or have ignored the fact that certain expressions in hiding the reality of citations, but in others there are objective difficulties. In some puns the best thing would be to put the footnotes as did Planeta with headlines shown in the cartoons.
